Josephine Ann (“Jo”) Palko died in her sleep in the early morning hours of November 21, 2022 in Aztec, N.M. Jo was born to Joseph Racosky and Anna Dill on Sept. 13, 1933, in Windber, Pa., not far from the small coal mining town of Maple Ridge where she grew up. Jo graduated from Conemaugh Township High School, where she excelled in academics and was a cheerleader. While working at the Johnstown Tribune, Jo met the love of her life, Pete Palko, who would become her husband of more than 64 years. Jo was an accomplished cook, loved watching birds and soccer (mostly soccer), and spending time with good friends and family. She enjoyed joking, having a beer, decorating for the holidays and setting a comforting table, which was always open to the children’s friends or anyone who might need a good meal. Jo was preceded in death by her husband Pete and son Joe. She is survived by her daughters Mary, Susan, Kim and Monica and by her six grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom she cherished. The family will honor Jo with a private memorial mass, which according to Pete and Jo’s wishes will be followed at later at a joint celebration of their lives and their internment together at Arlington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who are able make a donation to Many Mothers (manymothers.org) or your local women’s shelter.
