A community comes together to help give a Westchester County cheerleading squad the opportunity of a lifetime.

Thousands of dollars have been raised for the Mount Vernon High School cheerleading team, which qualified to compete in the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championship at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, according to head coach Mekiyah Knox.

However, in order to participate in the championship, which will be held from Friday February 10 to Sunday February 12, the team must raise funds to pay for travel costs, accommodation costs, accommodation, registrations, articles of uniform and meal, Knox said.

That’s why she started a GoFundMe so community members can help the team reach their most exciting competition yet.

“Our students need your support to make this opportunity a reality!” Knox said on the GoFundMe page. She added that every student on the team also prioritized their academics and passed all their courses.

Additionally, the team has also overcome adversity, such as suffering “an extreme loss of their sister in joy” in April 2022 when the team captain was fatally stabbed when a school parade turned violent, a said Knox.

Knox added that she hopes the competition will reward the team and give them a chance to travel.

As of Tuesday, December 20, over $3,000 has been raised towards the team’s goal of $40,000.
