Deion Sanders is taking over as Colorado’s head coach, bringing his charisma and larger-than-life personality to a struggling Pac-12 program that has sunk to the depths of college football.
The agreement was announced Saturday night by CU athletic director Rick George.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer has been Jackson State, a historically Black college that plays in the NCAA’s second Division I division, since 2020. Sanders has guided the Tigers to consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference titles.
The Tigers beat Southern in the SWAC championship game Saturday in Jackson, Mississippi, and hours later Colorado announced it was coming to Boulder.
Sanders told his team after the game that he had accepted another job, but planned to coach Jackson State (12-0) in the Celebration Bowl for black colleges on Dec. 17 in Atlanta against and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion North Carolina Central.
“When you coach you either rise or fall,” Sanders told his team. “There are no graves for coaches where they die. They will fire you or you will walk away.”
Sanders spoke about the lack of black head coaches at the highest levels of college football and trying to be a catalyst for change.
“It’s not about the bag,” Sanders said. “It’s about opportunity.”
The Tigers went 27-5 under Sanders and he was named SWAC coach of the year the past two seasons.
Known as “Prime Time” during his NFL playing career, the 55-year-old Sanders prefers “Coach Prime” these days. Colorado will be a challenge for the magnetic Sanders, who is coming off a 1-11 program. But he brings instant brand recognition and a track record of being able to recruit top-level talent.
“There were a lot of qualified and impressive people interested in being the next football coach in Colorado, but none of them had the pedigree, the knowledge and the ability to connect with student-athletes like Deion Sanders,” George said. a statement. “Not only will Coach Prime energize our fan base, I am confident that he will return our program to national prominence while leading a quality and elite team.”
The Buffaloes have just one more winning season since joining the Pac-12 in 2011. They fired Karl Dorrell in October and interim coach Mike Sanford finished the season resulted in a 63-21 loss to No. 12 Utah at home.
Colorado is far from its glory days under Hall of Fame coach Bill McCartney, who led the Buffaloes to a national championship after the 1990 season.
As the program tries to build its name, image and image, creating the Buffs4Life Foundation to help student-athletes, Colorado has also seen several players announce their plans in recent days. recently entered the transfer portal.
Sanders has the numbers to bring several players with him — possibly even his son, Shedeur Sanders, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Jackson State who has 36 TD catches this season and just six interceptions.
Sanders had a standout NFL career
Deion Sanders was an All-American at Florida State before excelling in the NFL with five teams, including the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys. He also played nine MLB seasons and reached the World Series with the Atlanta Braves in 1992.
Over the years, Sanders was an analyst and star of reality television shows and commercials, including spots for Aflac with Alabama coach Nick Saban.
Jackson State hired Sanders in September 2020 after he coached his sons at a troubled Texas high school.
When he transferred to Jackson State, Sanders called the fit “a match made in heaven,” and quickly promoted the school in Mississippi’s capital.
Jackson State’s success was significant as it made a program that produced Hall of Famers such as Walter Payton, Lem Barney, Jackie Slater and Robert Brazile active again among HBCUs, and Sanders was determined to keep it as like that.
Sanders’ arrival has raised the profile of Jackson State. They were on the cover of Sports Illustrated in July — a feature about how Sanders rebuilt the program — and saw ESPN’s “College GameDay” visit Jackson State in October. Sanders also appeared on “60 Minutes” in a profile story.
Jackson State athletics director Ashley Robinson said in a statement that Sanders “challenged norms and altered perceptions of what was thought possible to create new visions of success while inspiring the community and creating a vision of sports and HBCU culture.”
Sanders told his coaching staff at Robinson and the Jackson State administration that receivers coach T.C. Taylor be the next coach.
Sanders scored big on the recruiting trail, landing five-star tight end Travis Hunter and four-star wide receiver Kevin Coleman for this year’s team. Sanders told The Associated Press in an October podcast that both players chose JSU because he and his staff will prepare them for careers in the NFL.
“Deion Sanders’ status extends beyond sports, and his hiring elevates not only the football program but the university as a whole,” CU Boulder Chancellor Philip DiStefano said. “This is an exciting new chapter in the long, storied history of Colorado football and I look forward to standing shoulder to shoulder with our alumni, supporters and fans to cheer on Coach Prime and our student-athletes during coming.”
