Jaguar insider: “A step in the right direction…”

JACKSONVILLE – This one could be important going forward.

Winning the game this past Sunday was important for the young and improving Jaguars. The feedback they received was great – and the conditions were important, too.

As Head Coach Doug Pederson sees it, attitude can be fundamental.

“It’s good for the whole team to be able to finish the game,” Pederson said Monday, a day after the Jaguars rallied for a 28-27 victory over the AFC North-leading Baltimore Ravens. of TIAA Bank.

“We talk about it all the time, but learning to finish — learning to win a game — helps everybody’s confidence.”

The Jaguars (4-7) through 10 games this season have lost six games by a score or less. They have won five of those losses in the final minutes with a chance to lead, and have lost five games in which they led or were tied in the fourth quarter.

“It’s been an amazing year for us,” Pederson said. “You look at a lot of different things and you think, ‘This should be different. But you know? I’m just amazed by the guys. No matter what happens, the results, whether they’re happy or crazy, but they learn to put it behind them and focus on the next challenge.

“That’s what I saw. That’s what motivates us as we progress. Then a win like ours [Sunday] and it only improves the performance.”

Pederson on Monday discussed the merits of such a victory, emphasizing the situation shown by the lead turnover seven times – four times in the second quarter and three times in the fourth quarter.

“It’s a step in the right direction,” Pederson said. “Your team feeds off the coaches as well. If there’s any fear on our side, the players will feel it and understand that. That’s one of the things I’ve admired about our staff. it’s chaos in the field, there’s a lot of silence.

“I think the players feel that, and we coach about that.”

Pederson, too, on Monday discussed hitting the quarterback, who created a franchise like the Ravens in the postseason. Baltimore in 14 seasons under Head Coach John Harbaugh had two losing seasons with nine postseason appearances and a Super Bowl title after the 2012 season.

“That’s one of the things we talked to our team a little bit about last week – the tradition that Coach Harbaugh has built there over the years, and how they’ve built that team,” Pederson said. “There’s a real identity with that team. They know exactly who they are. We’re trying to get everything grounded here and learn.

“That’s a well-coached team, a disciplined team. That’s the type of game … the opportunity for them to pull that game out and win that game. When you look at Baltimore and what Coach Harbaugh has built there’s kind of of the model according to the cultural tradition. that’s what we’re trying to do here.”

Pederson, too, said a game like Sunday’s suggests a solid foundation is being laid.

“He has the right leadership,” he said. “You’ve got the right guys. You’ve got the right coaches. You’ve got a lot of support within the organization. That can put you on a path that hopefully leads to some of that.”
