A teenage girl who has lost part of her leg to cancer becomes captain of the cheerleading squad in Scotland

A teenager who was diagnosed with cancer as a toddler and whose one leg is 3cm shorter than the other will captain Scotland in an international cheerleading competition.

The day after her third birthday, 14-year-old Summer Wronieck was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer that started in her muscles.

She started Highland Dancing at the age of two and a half and proved to be a quick learner.

After grueling cancer treatment, Summer began learning a cheer routine at the age of four.

Summer is still in physical therapy after several surgeries as part of her treatment.

He had his first hip surgery on April 3, 2015, but suffered another setback a few months later when the inflatable slide he was playing on flipped over and broke his leg.

Another piece of metal was inserted into her leg in June 2015, but despite the injury, Summer decided she was well enough to go on a family holiday to Lanzarote in July.

It took six months before she could participate in cheerleading again, but she went to practice to feel like a part of the team.

Summer will be competing in the International Cheer Union Hip Hop category in Florida in April and was excited to have the support of the peer group that elected her captain.

The dance style is derived from acrobatic movements, including handsprings and flips.

Summer has a pair of custom Converse trainers with a wedge heel to facilitate participation and is hoping to find sponsors for her trip.

Proud parents Karen and Chris said they were delighted he had made it this far.

Summer said: “I’ve seen Bring It On but I don’t watch a lot of music videos.

“I had cancer treatment for six months, but I had to check myself in five years.

“I danced with heels in Converse shoes, I wear them every day.

“When it’s hard, I just try and do my best, if I can’t do it, I try a new skill.

“I’ve never been to America before, it’s going to be amazing.

“It’s going to be really good, there’s 18 or 19 of us in the team.

“I’m a little nervous, but I’m excited.”

Some of the moves involve waving your arms to look like a “cool effect”.

He will be in Florida for nine days.

He added: “My school friends are quite proud and excited.

“I like all the tricks and stuff like flipping.

“I’m not old enough to take exams yet, but I have homework.

“The race in 2020 was cancelled, but I’m more confident now.”

He said being voted captain was like a big sister to the team.

Summer added: “You make sure everyone gets it right and is happy with what they’re doing.

After breaking her leg, Summer had to wait six or seven months before she could do cheerleading again.

Now he plans to contribute to the weight training at the gym.

During the closure he had to undergo physiotherapy at Teams and train at home in Cupar, Fife.

Mum-of-two Karen, 46, said: “Summer started dancing at the age of two and a half.

“She took up Highland Dancing and proved very capable.

“We found out he had cancer the day after his third birthday.

“She continued to dance as well as she could.

“He did Highland Dancing, then moved on to tap, ballet and modernism.

“It took a lot out of his week.

“We are happy that he became the captain of the team.

“He was picked for a reason, his teammates have to like him.

“We are over the moon for him and extremely proud that he has come as far as he has.”

After two years at Navarro, she announced that she would continue in the season 1 finale, only to later return for Cheer in season 2.
