One of Denver’s original “Bronettes” still roots for the Broncos every week
At the age of 76, Nancy Alfsen can still roll the baton well. The Colorado sports fan was a pro at a young age, and got the opportunity of a lifetime when the Broncos were formed in 1960.
When she was 14, Alfsen auditioned to be a Denver Broncos cheerleader. They were called “The Broncettes” then. He did it.
“It was really fun. It was work, but it was fun, when they showed the colors before the game. Any band that did that, we were in front of them and we did our culture,” he said.
All was well until one match when the player accidentally met Brancette.
“He got caught. He broke his leg, so next year I think you should have been 18,” Alfsen said.
Since he was young, he couldn’t be happy or around the team anymore. And he never got the chance to meet his favorite Broncos player — Bud McFadin.
“He was one of the first Broncos to get off the bus when we greeted them when they came to Denver, and I just saw those big blue eyes and took a breath,” he said.
He never met his second favorite player, either: John Elway.
“But I bought two cars from him,” he said with a laugh, referring to the sale of a car in Elway’s name.
Alfsen left leading back to become a registered nurse. She worked as a nurse for 30 years.
And more than six decades after becoming a Broncette, he still roots for the Broncos every week.
“What do you think of the Bronco this season?” CBS News Colorado’s Michelle Griego asked him.
“I love them, so it doesn’t matter if they win 1 or not, they’re my team.”
