JACKSONVILLE – The search for answers continues.
That’s true in several areas around the Jaguars these days – and it’s true defensively this week in takeaways, an area that started the season as a team strength and has since become a mystery.
“We need to be able to figure that out,” head coach Doug Pederson said Monday.
The Jaguars led the NFL in four games this season with nine takeaways. They have had no turnover in their last three games and just one during a losing streak that stretched to four games that included a 23-17 loss to the New York Giants at TIAA Bank Field Sunday.
“We just don’t make the plays that you have to make,” said cornerback Tyson Campbell. “The past is the past. We have an opportunity this week to boost our sales again. We’ll fix that.”
The Jaguars narrowly missed two turnovers on Sunday, with an offside penalty on outside linebacker Josh Allen nullifying a fumbling first-half recovery by cornerback Darious Williams, and a rough-the-passer penalty on inside linebacker Foye Oluokun, which an interception in the third quarter from the inside nullified linebacker Devin Lloyd.
“We have to understand as players that we have to do our best to generate revenue,” said Pederson. “Sometimes they come in bunches. But we have to go back to what we did in the first part of the season, how we started the season by chasing the quarterback and making turnovers and understanding what our players do best.”
The Jaguars have registered two sacks in their last three games after registering nine games in their first four. Rookie outside linebacker Travon Walker registered the team’s lone sack on Sunday after the Giants lost two offensive linemen — including rookie right tackle Evan Neal — to first-half injuries.
“You’d think you could get a little bit more rush there,” Pederson said. “We have to look at that and do better in situations like that. That’s the chess game of football. You try to create those matchups when you can.”
The Jaguars are 15th in NFL yards allowed after seven games. They allowed the Indianapolis Colts 434 yards in a Week 6 loss, with quarterback Matt Ryan throwing for 389 yards. They allowed 436 yards and 236 yards rushing on Sunday, with running back Saquon Barkley rushing for 110 yards with 24 carries and quarterback Daniel Jones for 107 yards and a touchdown with 11 carries.
“As staff, we have to look at what we’re doing in terms of the game plan,” Pederson said. “It’s like attacking. When you have problems offensively, you often try to take the information back a little and try to free your players a little mentally.
“Those are things that we need to address over the next few days, I think, and see if we’re doing too much.”
Sunday marked the second time this season that the Jaguars struggled on offense with a quarterback able to run effectively. They let the Philadelphia Eagles with quarterback Jalen Hurts rush 210 yards as a team in a 29-21 Week 4 road loss.
“The only area we need to look at is obviously the quarterback and some of the quarterback runs with athletic guys,” Pederson said. “These are areas that we need to clean up on the defensive side. Since we know this is their type of game plan, just focus and fixate on it and try to win each one.
“There’s a lot of different ways you can play defense there, so it’s all just about communication and understanding. This goes back to understanding your role, understanding the call, the nuances of various adjustments that an offense can make and that a defense needs to make.”
Every game is played at Wembley Stadium. This deal allows the Jaguars to significantly increase their local revenue. Revenue from previous games in London at Wembley Stadium accounted for 11-15% of the franchise’s local revenue.
