Jan. 12—Currently, there are no city sponsored football fields in Lebanon.
For 12 years, Lebanon Youth Football and Cheerleading had to find its own places to practice and play sports. Currently, the organization’s flag football program will be held in the back of the Fairview Church. Winfree Bryant Middle School is also allowing the program to use its field on Saturdays.
“The stadium (which is being built next to Highway 231, including five football fields) is a big thing, and when we heard it was coming in, we were like, ‘Oh, that’s great. .. football field,'” said Lebanon Youth Football and Cheerleading President David Paris. “There are no football fields currently being built in the stadium.”
Paris spoke at a meeting of the Lebanon Council on January 2 to ask him to sit down and talk with city officials about the program that has become a city. On Wednesday, he sat down with Lebanon Mayor Rick Bell and Lebanon Parks and Recreation Department Director William Porter.
“They told me that those fields (in the new stadium) can be multi-purpose, and as long as there is no conflict with football, they will allow us to play there,” said a Paris. “They’re not against working with us on that, and in the second phase, they’re looking at adding some football fields.”
The city has agreed to put the program on the website and is considering the possibility of funding the program since there is no land and since the city does not have access to it. now an opportunity for its use.
The current program is player registration fees and donations to raise its flag football in the spring and its football game in the fall.
“Last year, we had nine teams, about 17-18 kids per team,” said Paris. “The price of everything has gone up.”
Lebanon Youth Football and Cheerleading provides helmets and jerseys for its players and must pay for lighting for its field. It also provides scholarships for the registration fees of athletes whose families are on government assistance.
More than funding, Paris wants to be able to provide a field for the players of the program.
“It means a stadium for us where we can host games,” Paris said. “We can run on our own terms, we can take care of ourselves and have a place for the kids to play and call home.”
These demands were expressed to Bell during the meeting held on Wednesday.
“They want a permanent place, something nice and they can call their place,” Bell said. “It’s something that wasn’t on my radar, but now that I know how many people they serve and how many kids play with the organization, it’s something we really want to help.”
Paris hopes to continue discussions with the city in an attempt to resolve the issue.
