Texas Southern breaks ground on new strength and conditioning facility

Texas Southern has begun construction on its new strength and conditioning facility for the athletic department.

HOUSTON – Texas Southern broke ground on its new 6,000 square foot strength and conditioning facility this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The event was attended by the marching band, cheerleaders, football and basketball teams.

President dr. Lesia L. Crumpton wrote, “We celebrate because this is a gift of transformation for our student-athletes. And we are happy and excited to give you this gift today.”

We felt it was a game changer for us,” Vice President of Athletics Dr. Kevin Granger told Fox reporter Nate Griffin.

“In today’s society, the first thing most student-athletes look at are the facilities. We have upgraded our facilities to provide today’s and tomorrow’s student-athletes with first-class facilities when they attend Texas Southern University.”

Last season, before the departure of Deion Sanders, Jackson State completed upgrades to its practice complex with state-of-the-art equipment and meeting facilities. Prairie View’s athletic facility has been one of the best in the Southwestern Athletic Conference for several seasons.

Texas Southern’s upgrade will attract modern recruits to the school’s football, basketball, volleyball, track and field and other sports programs.

dr. Crumpton credited head football coach Clarence McKinney when they first met for advocating the need for a new practice facility. “The coaches chose to lead through tough times, do the best with what they had and stand up for the needs of the student-athletes.”

Administrators anticipate that the new building will be completed by late 2023 or early 2024.

“This is a premier strength and conditioning facility where we have focused on building student-athletes,” stated Vice President of Athletics Granger. “We’re a Division I program and we need to start looking and feeling like a Division I program.”
