Georgia offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting staff Chandler LeCroy were killed in a car accident Saturday night in Athens, the school announced Sunday morning.
“The entire Georgia family is devastated by the tragic loss of football student-athlete Devin Willock and football staff member Chandler LeCroy,” the statement read.
“Devin and Chandler were two special people who meant so much to the University of Georgia, our football program and our athletic department. Please keep your families in your prayers during this very difficult time.”
According to Athens-Clarke County Police, the one-car crash occurred at 2:45 a.m. ET on Jan. 15 when a 2021 Ford Expedition driven by LeCroy went off the road and struck two telephone poles and several trees. Willock, a 20-year-old redshirt sophomore, was reportedly dead when emergency responders got there. LeCroy was taken to the hospital, but died a short time later from her injuries.
There were two other passengers in the car, a 21-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman, both members of the Georgia football program. Both were injured in the crash and are currently in “stable condition,” but no further details, including their names, have been released.
The crash happened just hours after Georgia celebrated its national championship victory over TCU with a parade and ceremony at Sanford Stadium. Willock, a New Jersey native, has appeared in every game Georgia has played this season, including the conference championship game and both College Football Playoff games.
“We are all heartbroken and devastated by the loss of Devin Willock and Chandler LeCroy,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said. “Devin was an outstanding young man in every way. He was always smiling, a great teammate and a joy to coach. Chandler was a valuable member of our football staff and brought an incredible attitude and energy every day. We mourn with their families on this tragic loss and we will support them in every possible way.”
