Angela Bassett is raving about her No. 1 cheerleader, husband Courtney B. Vance. Speaking with ET backstage at the 28th Annual Critics Choice Awards Sunday night, Bassett spoke candidly about Vance’s support during awards season.
“Oh, it’s amazing,” Bassett, who took home the award for best supporting actress for her performance as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever said. “We all need one. We all deserve one.”
The award also means something to Bassett, as the 64-year-old actor tells ET he’s been surprised by the love he’s received since the film’s release.
“I’m grateful and very grateful for this praise and all the love I’ve been receiving these past few months. It’s wonderful,” Bassett shared. “It’s the wind beneath your wings, it’s amazing.”
Vance also spoke to ET about his wife’s “satisfying” Golden Globe win — a moment Bassett’s proud husband captured on his phone, in a modern and glamorous moment.
“It was 30 years since he — so, it was a little scary, but ultimately satisfying,” Vance said of Basset’s first Golden Globe win since 1994. “I mean, finally, we just, we work. And we’ believe I’ve been working the whole time this one. She is a force. There are few people like her.”
Although it was nice to take home the trophies, Vance said he tells his wife not to get “caught up” in the hardware.
“We do,” he said of the advice he gives another thespian. “People will eventually come to you if you just stay who you are, where you are.”
During his acceptance speech Sunday, Bassett not only celebrated who he is, but the Black players who came before him and paved the way, including Ruby Dee and Diahann Carroll.
“It was their amazing work that showed me that there was a place for me in this show business, especially at a time when black women weren’t being portrayed effectively, often — not on television or on the big screen. . But thank God for them,” Basset said.
As he did at the Golden Globes, Bassett also praised everyone involved in Black Panther, including the film’s director, Ryan Coogler, as well as the late Chadwick Boseman, who played King T’Challa in the first film.
“We have shown the world that we can create and lead a billion-dollar box-office success,” he said. “And my prayer is that that door will remain open, and the sky is the limit for other Black creators and storytellers around the world to join us.”
