TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA – NOVEMBER 09: A fan tailgates before the game between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the LSU Tigers at Bryant-Denny Stadium on November 09, 2019 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
I love football, which includes both college football and the NFL. And there’s nothing like rocking Bank of America Stadium on a night game when the Panthers are good. (I know I know that was forever ago). But I’ll die on the hill that the atmosphere for college football is far superior to that of the NFL. The passion of being part of a school community (not just a town), the band, the cheerleaders, the general importance of every game, and of course the tailgates. Yes, people tailgate before NFL games. But if you’ve been to a good college tailgate, you know there’s no comparison. For example, I went to NC State, tailgating on the fairgrounds with the fraternities or the RV Lot, music blasting, and making friends with everyone around you. It’s just a different breed. You can argue again and again about who hosts the best college football tailgates. There are many, many schools that do this well. And our friends at WSN decided to rank the best football tailgates around the country.
This list is obviously debatable, I’d say the South is home to the best tailgates, but the top 3 on this list don’t fit that bill. But 4th place? Well it’s right in our backyard and well south. It pains me to write something complimentary about an ACC rival. But regardless I’m going to nurse it and maybe one day I’ll go down to Death Valley (you know who that is now for sure), to take a game. Read on to see the top 10 tailgates in college football according to WSN.
One University of Minnesota study estimates that 18 percent of fans tailgate before games, but there’s room for improvement, with more than 17 million attending regular-season NFL games and nearly 74 million attending games of Major League Baseball.
