TAMPA, Fla. – The formula for success to motivate the Bulls at the University of South Florida is very simple.
“Grit, Growth, it’s going to be like that glory,” explained third-year leader Ansley Topchik.
Last week, Topchik and her teammates won their third consecutive national championship in Orlando. The University of Kentucky is the only other school in NCAA history to pull off a three-peat.
“It’s really amazing, I think it just shows that our coaches and this team have really built a family system,” Topchik added. “Be that team that can create this legacy and buy into the process. To be here for all three national titles has been amazing. To see the program grow and develop. It’s a dream come true.”
The USF program returned to the tournament in 2016 after a 13-year absence from the national tournament. The program was restarted under current coach Gillian Guadagnino. The Bulls quickly became competitive and never looked back.
“These kids have worked very, very hard for the last seven years to really build an empire, really,” Guadagnino said. “It’s great that all of our students support this and then these kids buy it.”
USF’s roster is a mix of experienced and first-year players. Ramsey Robinson is a young basketball player in high school, and he was never a cheerleader before he got to USF. But he didn’t let his lack of experience scare him from joining a power program.
“Maybe I don’t have the most experience, or maybe I’m a little nervous about these skills,” Robinson said when explaining his early style. “Faith is what got me through that fear and led us to these national championships.”
The key to bull preparation is attention to detail…every detail.
“We know exactly what to do to prepare, even down to the little things like how we walk, how we hold our chests,” junior Erica Scarborough said. “[Coach Gaudagnino] prepares us for any situation.”
Gaudagnino joked that winning never gets old, but she doesn’t carry one of the three championship rings.
“We are very humbled and feel privileged and honored to be around such amazing people.”
