Bring glory and royalty, rejoicing and song.
Bull City residents and NC Central University football fans will gather in large numbers this weekend to celebrate the team’s breathtaking national championship win last month in Atlanta.
The NCCU Eagles won their fourth HBCU championship on Dec. 17, defeating the Jackson State University Tigers, 41-34, in the Cricket Celebration Bowl in addition to Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The university previously won national titles in 1954, 2005, and 2006.
NCCU’s win last month was nail-biting, and it might be the most exciting quarterback duel of the year between Eagles quarterback Davius Richard and Tigers’ Shedeur Sanders.
It’s hard not to acknowledge the close-out presence and influence of Jackson State coach, NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, Shedeur Sanders’ father. Coach Sanders’ athleticism has resulted in his playing in two Super Bowls and a major league baseball World Series.
During his life as an athlete, the champion, the flamboyant champion was called “Prime Time” or “Neon Deion” and was hailed as a game changer. He became known as “Coach Prime” when he was named JSU’s head coach in 2020, and led the Tigers to the HBCU championship in 2021.
His presence at Jackson State brought national attention and brought in unprecedented funding for HBCU football. The Celebration Bowl became very popular with Jackson State boasting an undefeated record, and especially after Sanders announced in early December that he would be the head football coach at Colorado State University, where he signed a contract said to be worth five million dollars.
The reaction is mixed. Some observers pointed to Sanders’ interview with 60 Minutes last year, when he said that “God had called him” to lead Jackson State. He then added that he wanted to “change lives” after the police killing of George Floyd in June 2020, three months before he became Jackson State’s coach.
However, after NCCU spoiled Jackson State’s bid for a perfect 13-0 season, among the memes that appeared on social media was a spoof from the show Next Friday, where the faces of players Uncle Elroy and Craig were replaced with exaggerated pictures of Sanders. Uncle Elroy and Shedeur as Craig.
“I know I said I’m not [someone] who makes less money and runs around the suburbs,” a larger photo of Sanders explains. “Yes, you are right. That’s what I said. But as soon as I got my check, I was GONE!
But others note that Sanders was paid $500,000 a year at Jackson State, a fraction of what head coaches are paid at college programs.
Darrell Barr, an NCCU grad who earned a business degree in 1983, says Sanders shouldn’t be ridiculed for accepting a multimillion-dollar deal that will allow him to better care for his family. He points to former HBCU coaches who have stayed at their universities for decades. They are “legends,” he says, but they are underpaid for football programs that are in short supply.
“I don’t like that business model,” Barr told the INDY this week.
NCCU’s HBCU championship ceremony will be held Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. on the NCCU campus, according to a school news release.
The festivities include a parade that will start on Cecil Street, go to Fayetteville Street, and end at O’Kelly-Riddick Stadium on Lawson Street.
After the game, a pep rally will be held on the field, followed by a ceremony recognizing the team and coaching staff with Durham mayor Elaine O’Neal, who earned her bachelor’s and law degrees from the school, and its Chancellor, Johnson O. Akinleye.
Other participants at the campus party include the football team’s players and their head football coach Trei Oliver. The school band — the Sound Machine — will also be there to provide some cheer, along with the NCCU cheerleaders and Eddie the Eagle mascot.
NCCU officials say those who will attend the celebration “will also have the opportunity to meet and receive signed papers from team members. People can see and take photos with the trophies awarded to the football program after winning the Cricket Celebration Bowl and the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Parking is available in the Latham Parking Deck (705 E. Lawson Street), which can be accessed from Dupree and Lincoln streets, according to the release.
