The Cheerleading team is ready to go Stateside and compete at the highest level in the World Championships

Teesside’s cheerleading team are ready to head Stateside and compete against some of the world’s best.

Middlesbrough-based Evolution Athletics are a 16-strong squad heading to the World Cheerleading Championships in April, where they will be showing off their acrobatic skills with Disneyworld Florida as their backdrop. Cheerleading is popular again thanks to Cheer Netflix, with Evolution Athletics hoping to show people that cheerleading isn’t just pompoms and standing on the sidelines – it’s a high-level sport.

Head coach Laura Pennicott, 29, started her career as a student at Teesside University and now runs Evolution Athletics with her husband and co-director Lewis, who is an active part of the team. Laura spoke to Teesside Live about the team, their hopes for the future and how they hope to break down any preconceived notions about cheerleading.

Laura, from Stockton, said: “The team are currently competing at level six out of seven, seven being the hardest – there’s no rush when we compete and it’s all about athleticism. full time instead, we are the only sixth level team in Tees and although we are based in Middlesbrough we have athletes from all over the North East competing for us.

“I used to travel to Leeds and Sheffield to compete so it’s great now that we’ve set up our local team so athletes who live nearby can take part. We want people to understand that it’s a real sport – we’re turning people around and not standing on the sidelines like you see in movies, it’s more like gymnastics and we want to remove the stigma that is often associated with cheerleading.”

Each athlete has to come up with £2,500 each for the once-off chance to compete in America, but squad member and co-director of Lewis’ company, Cleveland Containers, has helped the team by funding them so they can all have their achieve. dream of competing on the world stage.

In April, Evolution Athletics will be ridding Middlesbrough of the sunshine state as they travel to Florida for the World Cheerleading Championships. While in America, the team will have the opportunity to train at one of the best gyms in the sport of Top Gun Cheerleading, where the Top Gun All Stars are big names in the world of cheer.

Evolution Athletics, whose team members are aged between 14 and 32, will then compete in the World Cheerleading Championships in boiling Florida, a change from the balmy temperatures of Teesside.

Laura said: “It’s going to be really hot when we compete especially because it’s outside, it’s quite difficult because we don’t mind the extra heat and the pressure of being on a huge stage! A big stage it’s advanced but we’re ready to go and get our name out there.

“We want to put the North East on the map and represent Middlesbrough. We want to show people that there are athletes in the North East as well as anyone else from anywhere else in the UK and around the world. “

Between now and April, Evolution Athletics will be training at every opportunity so that they are ready for the tough competition at the World Championships in April. To follow their journey as the only Teesside team at the championships – visit their Facebook here.
