CHILLICOTHE – Sometimes a career path takes a very unexpected turn – towards curly hair.

“I was very calm but a bit ordinary,” assessed Carrie James. “I dreamed of being a veterinarian until I followed a local vet in college. He was removing an abscess from a dog and that dream went out the window!

Today, James is the Owner, Curl Specialist (“and Cheerleader!”) at Making Waves Hair & Color workshop.

“I started making waves in the fall of 2021,” she said. “It all happened so fast. I drove a different direction from the house than usual, saw the “For Rent” sign, drove around the block, and made the call. It was at the very end of September and in November I was open for business. It was definitely a whirlwind!”

“I’ve always wanted to create a professional, supportive and loving environment,” she continued. “I consider other designers as friends. I love supporting other girls! I am not in competition with them, only myself. There is enough hair, skin and nails for all of us. I want to see us all succeed!

James grew up in Chillicothe, graduated from Zane Trace in 1997 and two decades later, after working for a medical supply company, graduated from the Ohio State School of Cosmetology.

“I actually started this career path out of a love of makeup and nails,” she said. “I was lucky enough to train with Lacie Wehrle in Fort Wayne, Indiana right after graduating and learned different Balayage techniques and started falling in love with hair.”

“Then later in my career,” she added, “I fell in love with natural curls and studied under several brands learning many techniques. I am proud to be the only certified Devacurl stylist in southern Ohio.

His clients appreciate skills.

“Carrie’s living room is stellar,” reviewed Paige O’Dell. “I searched for Carrie as a girl with curly hair. I drive from the Portsmouth area to her salon. Her attention to detail is impeccable. My curly hair has never looked better. I found out, after almost 50 years, that I was doing everything wrong for a curly-haired person. My granddaughter and my daughter-in-law are also now Carrie’s clients. She is amazing!”

Another “longtime guest” Jan Green agreed.

“Carrie is a great stylist, a smart businesswoman, and a wonderful, fun person,” Green said. “I always leave her shop with a smile on my face.”

“Couldn’t be happier,” Skaggs replied. “The look on my guests’ faces is everything to me. Curly hair is my passion!
