It’s sentencing day for a Mount Vernon cheerleader who admitted to fatally stabbing another cheerleader last year.
April 8, 2022 was supposed to be a joyous day at Mount Vernon, but it went horribly wrong.
A citywide celebration was underway for Mount Vernon High School’s state champion boys basketball team.
Two hours after a motorcade carrying the team went to every school in the city, a huge brawl broke out with a group of girls on East Prospect Avenue.
During the fight, two girls were stabbed: Mount Vernon High School cheerleader Kayla Green, 16, and Mainece Simpson, 15.
Kala died on the way to the hospital while Mainece was seriously injured.
Police later arrested a 15-year-old rival cheerleader in the attack. She has not been identified by her age.
The victim’s families urged prosecutors to charge the suspect with murder and attempted murder, but a grand jury indicted her on lesser charges.
Last month, the teenager appeared in court and pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and admitted to stabbing both Kayla Green and Mainece Simpson.
There were other charges the girl was facing, including assault, attempted assault and criminal possession of a weapon, but they were all dropped due to the suspect’s age and in accordance with the law of the ‘state of New York.
As part of a plea deal, the teenager will receive a sentence of 3 to 9 years in state prison.
Sentencing is scheduled for this afternoon at the Westchester County Courthouse in White Plains.
