New York teenager sentenced to prison for deadly Mount Vernon stabbing of rival cheerleader

A 15-year-old girl will serve up to nine years in prison for stabbing a New York high school cheerleader to death in April 2022.

The Westchester County District Attorney’s office said Judge Susan Cacace on Tuesday sentenced a teenage girl, who was not named because she is a minor, to three to nine years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter in December.

The victim, 16-year-old Kayla Green, was a cheerleader at Mount Vernon High School when she was killed.

The fatal incident occurred during a major brawl after the high school boys’ 12th state championship parade.

According to the judge, Green, a sophomore and captain of the MVHS youth cheerleading team, was stabbed in the stomach in connection with the city’s “prolonged” cheerleading rivalry. He was pronounced dead in the hospital.

In an earlier report, the district attorney’s office said the girl who killed her was a member of an independent cheerleading club of which Green was a member, according to the New York Post.

The defendant apologized in court before being sentenced, expressing remorse for her “bad choices”.

“I think of all the different choices I could have made that day that would have kept Kayla alive and saved her family from heartache. But that’s why everyone’s here today, because I made the wrong choices,” CBS New York reported.

She also apologized for picking up her older sister and daughter.

Green’s family reportedly argued that the teen’s sentence and apology were insufficient as she could be out of prison in a few years.

“Her killer will be out in three years to live her life, have a family, make a career. My daughter will never see this,” said the victim’s mother, Laverne Gordon, according to CBS 2.

District Attorney Mimi Rocah said in a statement that Green’s death was senseless and devastated the community.

“As the Mount Vernon family and community grieve, I want to reiterate my commitment to working with our key community partners to meaningfully prevent violence and intervene, especially with our youth,” Roch wrote. “I know that nothing can heal the pain of losing a child. My office will do everything in its power, within New York law, to seek accountability in such cases.”
