WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (WCBS) – A New York teenager will spend several years in prison after pleading guilty to the stabbing death of a rival cheerleader.
The emotional moments came Tuesday when a judge sentenced the 15-year-old cheerleader to three to nine years in prison. The teenager has pleaded guilty to the stabbing death of 16-year-old Kayla Green, a member of a rival cheerleading squad in Mount Vernon, New York.
Green’s mother Laverne Gordon spoke in court about the pain she will forever feel at the loss of her promising daughter.
“Her killer will be out in three years to live his life, have a family and a career. My daughter will never see this,” Gordon said.
Green was attacked after a rally in Mount Vernon to celebrate the basketball championship in April 2022. The assailant was a 15-year-old armed with a knife, which she showed off on social media on April 8.
The motive is difficult to perceive.
“A long-standing rivalry between two cheerleading squads in the town of Mount Vernon,” said Westchester County District Judge Susan Cacace.
Cacace says the defendant, who has not been named because of her age, had a history of violent behavior.
Prosecutors say it’s impossible to truly understand what led her to her deadly path.
“This was a deliberate, senseless and heinous, intentional crime that caused immeasurable pain,” said prosecutor James Bavero.
The 15-year-old expressed regret in court and read a statement through tears.
“I think of all the different decisions I could have made that day that would have kept Kayla alive and spared her family this pain. But that’s why everyone is here today because I made a bad decision,” the message read in part.
The judge pointed to a promising sign when she said the 15-year-old was thriving in custody and hoped the teenager was on her way to making something of her life.
