NKU Cheer returns home to the Norse Nation with a standing third national under its belt after its recent national competition.
The Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) College Nationals are being held at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida from January 13-15. Almost all university cheerleading teams in the region participate in this competition.
The NKU cheerleading team traveled to the sunshine state to compete in the Division I class. Norse received their third place medal in the DI Small Coed Game Day category.
NKU Cheer took to Instagram after finishing the top three, writing, “We are in 3rd place in the NATION!!!! We take great pride in everything we do, and the feeling we have today is one like no other! We achieve every goal we set as a team and we do! No one can take all that! We are proud to always wear NORSE on our chest! #norseup #letsgonorse”
Shayla Aaron-Myles, head coach of the cheerleading squad, has been with the Norse since 2010, leading the group as they compete annually in the UCA National Championships. The team took home a third national title in 2018 in the Division I All-Girl category.
Previously, the team competed in the Division II class, where they won first national title for Small Coed in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010.
National competitions are divided into several divisions, for example the Game Day competition is divided into seven categories. NKU fell into Little Coed Play Day because they were in Division I with four or fewer boys on the team.
UCA describes the Game Day routine as traditional cheerleading: leading the crowd. The competing teams perform their varsity battle anthem, side cheers, as well as break time routines.
NKU Dance also travels to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando for the long weekend, competing in the Universal Dance College Nationals of the same name.
